Overtime Games

The History of Overtime Games

In 1972, Iowa became the first state to implement an overtime procedure for high school football games, coinciding with the Iowa High School Athletic Association Board of Controls introducing a playoff system. Under the overtime rules, each team receives the ball on the 10-yard line with four plays to score. If the game remains tied at the end of the overtime period, additional periods are played until a winner is determined.

Between 1951 and 1971, the Bettendorf Bulldogs played 186 football games, 9 of which ended in ties. Since 1972, they have played over 5 games, with only 12 going into overtime.

Bettendorf has faced Davenport Assumption in three overtime games, holding a 2-1 edge. The Bulldogs have also played Cedar Rapids Washington twice, but have come up short with an 0-2 record. However, Bettendorf remains unbeaten in two overtime match-ups against Iowa City West, boasting a perfect 2-0 record.

To date, Bettendorf has a 8-4 record in Overtime (66% winning record).
